Double, Double Toil and Trouble

It’s true, there is no shortage of Harry Potter memorabilia, events, or happenings in the world.  We are muggle’s consumed by magic and fascinated by themed events and happenings. So, naturally, we’re always looking for the next best thing. Well, this summer Potterheads can rejoice! There are two new outlets to get their fix, and to help you plan your summer vacations more appropriately.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was first introduced to our eyes (and our hearts) 20 years ago this summer. In honor of its anniversary, institutions around the world are inventing more creative ways for us to celebrate our love of the fantastical world that J.K. Rowling crafted for us. The New York Academy of Medicine, in East Harlem, has created a special collection in their digital archives. “How to Pass Your O.W.L.’s at Hogwarts: A Prep Course” is a carefully curated collection of texts, some dating back to the 15th century, that examine many creatures, plants and miscellaneous ideas from The Wizarding World. The collection was meticulously assembled by library curator (and Harry Potter superfan) Anne Garner. The collection is designed to represent a 5th year students studies at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as they prepare for their O.W.L.’s (‘Ordinary Wizarding Level’ exams- of course). The collection of texts is divided into 7 core subjects: Care of Magical Creatures, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Divination, Herbology, History of Magic, Potions, and Transfiguration. The amazing collection is available to all through the digital archives. In addition, tours will open soon, so you can actually see the books in person. The texts offer an amazing look back at ideas and mythology that formed and inspired the backbone of the Harry Potter series. The intricate interweaving of so many ideas and details from works like these help the reader get a glimpse of Rowling’s world-building skills. If offers another level of appreciation, and another place we can geek out over our beloved Harry Potter. You can check out the archives here – and happy studying!

After you work up an appetite from all of that studying, you will have to make a reservation to London’s “The Library,” a multi-faceted membership club that will be hosting “The Harry Potter Supper Club” through the end of September 2017. The supper club will serve a 7-course, decadent, Harry Potter inspired menu. Potterheads everywhere will be dressing up to dine out, enjoying anything from FireWhiskey to dessert by ‘Honeydukes.’ All guests are encouraged to come dressed in their finest Harry Potter garb, and meet promptly at The Library’s own ‘Platform 9 ¾’ for a cocktail reception, where all the magic begins. Tickets are priced at £55 for members and £75 for non-members, (muggles) and are selling out quickly! You can find out more at their events page, and begin planning your magical night of dining out right now!

With more and more events and exhibitions like these popping up all around the world, we are at an all time high for Potter-mania. The books have been translated into over 68 languages, and have sold more than 400 million copies around the world- so it’s safe to say you can celebrate without scrutiny. So, get out there- let your colors shine, and represent your house proudly (Gryffindors for life!). Make mania cool, and do what makes you smile. Happy celebrating Potterheads!
